Knowing where food comes from and the environment it’s
produced in is very important to Morrisons. That’s why it
supports the RSPCA Freedom Food scheme
Freedom Food is the farm assurance and food
labelling scheme set up by the RSPCA, one of
the world’s leading animal welfare organisations.
The scheme was set up in 1994 to improve the
welfare of farm animals and offer consumers
a higher welfare choice. Morrisons sells many
products from farms approved by Freedom
Food including eggs, chicken and salmon. John
Akehurst from Freedom Food is very pleased
that Morrisons is supporting the scheme: ‘It’s
encouraging to see a large retailer such as
Morrisons continue to support the Freedom Food
scheme. Customers get great-tasting produce,
safe in the knowledge that extra care has been
taken with the welfare of the animal,’ he says.
What is Freedom Food?
Freedom Food is the only UK farm
assurance scheme to focus solely on animal
welfare. The scheme, which is a registered
charity, approves farms to strict welfare
standards that cover every stage of an
animal’s life. This includes how the animals
are transported, handled and slaughtered,
ensuring they receive knowledgeable care
throughout their lives.
The standards are produced by the
RSPCA’s team of welfare scientists and
take into account leading scientific,
industry and veterinary advice. There
choice
are specific standards for each farmed
species to ensure that each animal is
provided with an environment that meets
their physical and behavioural needs.
The Freedom Food logo is only found on
products where the animal has been looked
after, at all stages of its life, to strict welfare
standards. Each member is assessed every
year and is subject to monitoring visits to
ensure these standards are met. Regular
traceability checks track labelled products
from supermarket shelf back to the farm.
